Team Sessions Include:
Skating Skills: A significant portion of the session will likely be dedicated to improving skating technique. Defencemen need to be strong skaters to effectively patrol the ice, defend against opponents, and join the offensive rush when appropriate. Skating drills may include edge work, acceleration, backward skating, pivoting, and agility drills.
Defensive Techniques: Team defenceman sessions will emphasize defensive fundamentals such as body positioning, stick placement, and reading the play. Players will work on techniques for defending against one-on-one situations, clearing the crease, blocking shots, and breaking up plays in the defensive zone.
Puck Handling and Passing: Defencemen need to be proficient in handling the puck and making accurate passes to transition from defense to offense. Sessions will include drills to improve puck control, passing accuracy, and the ability to make quick decisions under pressure.
Shooting from the Point: One of the primary offensive responsibilities of defencemen is to generate scoring opportunities from the blue line. Sessions will focus on improving shooting accuracy, power, and the ability to get shots through traffic and on net.
Physical Play and Body Contact: Defencemen often engage in physical battles along the boards and in front of the net. Sessions may include drills to improve body positioning, strength, and physicality while maintaining legal play.
Special Teams Play: Defencemen play key roles on both the penalty kill and power play units. Sessions will address specific skills and strategies for success in these situations, including shot blocking, clearing the zone, and quarterbacking the power play.
Game Situation Drills: To simulate real-game scenarios, sessions may include drills that replicate common situations defencemen face during games, such as defending odd-man rushes, executing breakout passes, and making quick decisions under pressure.
